Our un-African children...

I moved to Europe about nineteen years ago in search of a better life for myself and family. I wanted my children to have a childhood devoid of fear, some sense of normality and freedom to express who they are. My husband and I have worked very hard and provided a decent life for them, as many parents who are also living outside Africa have done. It's been tough and there's been a lot of ups and downs along the way. But it's a sacrifice I'm happy I was able to have provided for my children. But as these children grow up, how do we instill discipline into them? Have we forgotten how our parents brought us up with the fear of God constantly our reminder? We were seen not heard, and we dared not interrupt our parents while they spoke to us. Having a conversation with teenagers is tricky, especially when they already have their own opinions. Yep, our African children have been stripped of their inherited African-ness. Who do we blame, the society, ourselves or maybe the corrupt government back home in Africa where the 'checking-out' started.

Let me know what you think about your children living outside the continent and your experiences in raising un-African children.

Looking forward to read from you all.
